Phenol Research
Phenol is a highly reactive compound. It is bonded to a hydroxide group, making it classified as a molecule that is attached to -OH. It is also mildly acidic, making it very dangerous as it can cause chemical burns. Chemists must make sure that they handle this compound with great care in order to make sure that no injuries occur. "Phenol" refers to and hexagonal compound that is bonded to -OH (a hydroxyl group). So, the specific element that I was assigned, carbolic acid is another, more specific name. Phenol is considered an alcohol, however it reacts heavily with NaOH (unlike most other alcohols). It is soluble and water, and because it is not very acidic, during reactions it normally appears as a reddish color. Overall, phenol is a complex and fascinating drug that can be found from coal, with acidic qualities that are great for sterilizing instruments.
